We departed on a midweek break to experience everything WOW had to offer for ourselves, and it's safe to say it didn't disappoint. The development has taken the area of Gaia - already known for its world-class wine experiences - to new heights as it seeks to educate and pay homage to the industry that took its name from the city of Porto. WOW is a passion project of Adrian Bridge, CEO of The Fladgate Partnership which owns some of Europe's most historic port-houses and the museums even display some of his personal artefact collections. The area has eleven fantastic restaurants, bars, and cafes which have been lovingly crafted around old porthouse infrastructure as well as seven interactive museum experiences that will delight the whole family. Porto has gained massive popularity with tourists in recent times with an estimated four million people exploring the city each year - and while there's plenty to do around the wider region, the Cultural District stood head and shoulders above the rest.Įstablished in the Vila Nova de Gaia across the water from Porto's Old Town, the €115m project dubbed the World of Wine (WOW) - a title very much earned - opened during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, and the district has seen plenty of eager travellers since lockdown restrictions lifted. As a seasonal chill settles over Cork this month we decided to cast our eyes abroad in search of sunnier skies as we explored a newly revitalised district in one of Europe's historic cities.
